The Correct Nutrition and Housing of Your Home Bird
If you wish to keep your bird in auspicious conditions you have to pay serious attention to its feeding. Pets that live at people's homes in ornamental cages commonly belong to granivorous birds. Owing to the name of the species people feed them only with seeds, that is not correct. But in fact such birds change their food each time of the year in natural conditions. Birds like to vary their feed with various sorts of animal forages, vegetables, fruits, tree barks and so on. So, feed your bird with large diversity of meal and it will be robust.
Today one may buy wild bird seed almost everywhere, even on the web. As you see you can't feed your bird an entire year with seeds because it wouldn't harmonize with their natural nourishment.
From the first view you may not discover any illness after feeding your bird with the same forage for years. But with time illnesses will be shown. As a rule a bird may be sick with various types of diseases such as overweight, kidney disease, disorder of the reproductive function and many others. Also there can be many cases of infective illnesses because birds need vitamins and proteins in their nourishment.
So the main part of a bird's meal consists of grain blends. Different kinds of grains (wheat, millet, oats, maize and others) and seeds (canary seed, herbage seeds, seeds of lettuce) should be contained in this blend because it is very useful for a bird's prosperity. Of course there must be oil-yielding crops such as sunflower seeds, poppy seeds, hemp seed and diverse nuts. But you are to be careful because the excessive feeding with oil-yielding crops can be a reason of overweight.
Every bird has its own normal daily quantity of food so you are to follow that doses must not exceed the norm. Budgerigars must have 2 teaspoons a day and in the same time macaw is to have four tablespoonfuls every day.
Fresh forage contains different greeneries, wild herbage, fruits, vegetables, also fresh leaves and branches of trees. Animal forage must be added to a bird's ration as a source of proteins. You may feed your bird with boiled eggs, fatless cottage cheese and small amount of minced meat. The periods of feeding with such meal are different. For a usual bird it should be given one time a week, for a bird that has moult period - two times a week and in the period of nestling - every day. Pieces of chalk or small stones must be also included in an extra feeder in a bird's cage. They contain calcium and important for good digestion of a bird.
